Tesla Death Ray is an addictive tower defense game
It's a tower defense game in which you have to zap your enemies to oblivion. Much like in Xeno Defense, at the end of each level you get to the store and can use your hard-earned points to purchase upgrades and repair your tower.
Unlike Xeno Defense, you only get to the store if you pass the level. This makes the game much harder, because it means if you've made some wrong choices in terms of upgrades, now you're stuck with a level you simply cannot pass, and need to start the game all over again.
I should at least be able to sell off some of my equipment between retries of the same level, I think. But despite this one flaw, the game manages to be addictive, fun, and fast. I like it, and probably would have finished it if it hadn't been for the upgrade problem.Tesla Death Ray is an addictive tower defense game originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 13 Feb 2011 12:00:00 EST. While international developer access is great, Chrome users in those countries aren't going to benefit from the expansion for some time. Google says the consumer launch isn't going to happen until later this year. Facebook Nabs Founders Of Career Recruiting Service Pursuit
"Update: we've found a new home at Facebook! Although we'll be working on stuff unrelated to Pursuit, keep an eye out for great new features from us there and thanks to everyone who helped along the way."
The San Francisco based Pursuit was just three extremely over-educated guys -- Louis Eisenberg, Russ Heddleston, Nicholas Letourneau -- who according to their digital "Gone Fishing" sign, will be dropping Pursuit in um, pursuit of other things at Facebook. This is not surprising, as Facebook acquisitions are almost always about engineering talent versus product.
Tarzan Ball is a tricky hook-and-pull physics game
That's a handy ability to have, especially since you've got no legs, no arms, and no other means of transportation. In Tarzan Ball, the rope is everything. But you don't just swing around the screen aimlessly - that wouldn't be much of a game now, would it?
Instead, your goal in life is to collect "targets". Each level has one of these "targets" hidden away somewhere on the screen, usually behind some kind of barrier. Once you navigate close enough to the target, you can shoot your rope at it and just reel it in. That's when you pass the level.
You can't die in this game, but it can still be very frustrating. It's actually one of the tougher games I've posted recently. Still, if you enjoy physics games, this one is quite nicely made.

BTDigg, the first DHT 'trackerless' decentralized torrent search engine
DHT is a decentralized and distributed technology that enables users to download files from nearby peers without contacting a central tracker. BTDigg crawls the massive DHT network, hopping from peer to peer, and slowly builds up an index of every torrent in existence -- in theory, anyway.
The exciting thing about BTDigg is that you now don't have to upload a torrent to a tracker or indexer to share something. BTDigg will eventually stumble across your shared files and index them. Of course, the irony is that BTDigg centralizes the decentralized DHT network, defeating any of its privacy and security benefits.
The main thing holding BTDigg back, though, is a truly atrocious interface and almost complete lack of functionality. It's green and orange, presumably in an attempt to look like old monochrome monitors. The search algorithm itself is awful -- and there's absolutely no way to refine your search, either. A search for "Glee EZTV" brought up a seemingly random and unchronological listing of episodes -- with lots of multiple results, too!
Still, it's a fun proof of concept. We're sure that future versions will be better...BTDigg, the first DHT 'trackerless' decentralized torrent search engine originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 07:35:00 EST. Firefox 4 infographic from Mozilla taunts IE9
For the most part Rouget relies in Firefox's pure, numerical superiority, rather than real-world use cases. Firefox 4 supports more of the HTML5 and CSS3 standards. Firefox implements almost the entire JavaScript API, as opposed to IE9's mediocre 48%. Firefox supports more Web technologies. To really drive it home, the infographic even shows how Firefox 3.5 and 3.6 are superior to Microsoft's latest offering.
Don't be mesmerized by the tawdry typography, though: with juicy propaganda it's always what isn't said that matters. There is no mention of IE9's hyperspeed JavaScript engine, Chakra. There's no mention of pinned tabs or per-process tabs or Tracking Protection Lists. It feels a bit like a scrawny, bespectacled geek throwing stones at a fat billionaire with three trophy wives -- the nerd is probably right, but the pimp doesn't really care.
There's no doubt that Firefox 4 implements a broader range of Web technologies -- and don't get us wrong, it is an excellent browser -- but more stuff doesn't necessarily equate to better stuff. You can do a lot more with a pick-up truck than a Ferrari, but choosing which one you want to drive isn't necessarily an easy decisionFirefox 4 infographic from Mozilla taunts IE9 originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 15 Feb 2011 11:47:00 EST. Apple and Intel unveil Thunderbolt I/O technology
Update: Intel has thrown up its page on the technology, and it looks like the Light Peak name is officially no more. Intel indicates this speed will be enough to transfer a full-length HD movie (roughly 10 - 20GB in size) in less than 30 seconds. Intel also reinforces that this is compatible with existing DisplayPort devices and it also uses the PCI Express protocol for enhanced compatibility. Daisy-chaining will be possible, along with bus-powered devices, and cables can be made using either optical or electrical construction.Continue reading Apple and Intel unveil Thunderbolt I/O technologyApple and Intel unveil Thunderbolt I/O technology originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 09:01:00 EDT. Microsoft will release Internet Explorer 9 on March 14 at SXSW
This information tallies nicely with what we already know: Microsoft has said that there will only be one RC, and March 14 very nearly fits the six-week release cycle that Internet Explorer has so far stuck to. Most importantly, though, the IE team is holding a party at SXSW -- and parties generally celebrate something.
Microsoft has already said that the RC will automatically update to the final version, but we're not sure whether a switch will be flipped at the SXSW party, or if we'll have to wait for the next Patch Tuesday. Either way, a direct download should be made available around 9pm on March 14.
If you haven't played around with the Release Candidate yet, you really should. It won't satisfy you if you're an avid add-on user, or if you sync between computers, but if you're just looking for a slick, spartan and speedy browser, IE9 ticks all the boxes.Microsoft will release Internet Explorer 9 on March 14 at SXSW originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 18 Feb 2011 12:00:00 EST. Google begins to enable two-factor authentication across all accounts
Two-factor authentication uses your password and another proof of identity -- which in this case is an app called Google Authenticator, which runs on your smartphone. Every time you log in, you need to run the app and input the code it generates. The code is only good for a few seconds, which makes it very secure indeed.
Of course, if you lose your phone things can be a little tricky. Don't worry, though: the setup wizard lets you add a backup phone to your account, and generates some backup codes that you can use in a pinch.
Really, if you store any kind of sensitive data on your Google account (even your search history!), you should use two-factor authentication. It makes hacking your account almost impossible -- and in a world where your login credentials are synonymous with your real identity, that can only be a good thing.Google begins to enable two-factor authentication across all accounts originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 10 Feb 2011 12:30:00 EST. 'Windows On Speed': A comprehensive guide on speeding up your OS
The guide is impressively comprehensive -- it covers everything from partitioning your hard drive to installing more RAM -- but some Download Squad readers will probably find it a bit too simplistic. Having said that, it managed to teach us a couple of new things about Windows 7, so it can't be that simple.
We should also note that the guide offers a few bits of advice that we don't agree with: 20GB really isn't enough for a Windows 7 partition; something like 40GB would be more sensible -- with 1TB drives costing just a fistful of dollars, it's much better to overestimate your OS's requirements. The guide also suggests moving My Documents to a separate partition -- which is fine enough -- but it then goes on to suggest moving "all folders within your user profile" to a separate partition, which can cause issues with applying patches, service packs, and updating installed software.
In conclusion, the guide is a great resource but we're simply not sure of its target audience. It may be a bit overly-technical to send to your friends and family, and most geeks will already have their own preferred methods for keeping a Windows installation running smoothly.

'Apple just f***** over online music subs for the iPhone' -- Last.fm co-founder on Apple's 30% cut
Jones' apoplectic outburst is just one of many, too. Rhapsody yesterday said it won't bow to Apple's subscription policy, and CEO of on-demand music streamer we7, speaking to paidContent, thinks that the 30% share "makes music subscriptions economically unviable." If big-hitters like Spotify and Rdio can't produce the 30% that High Lord Jobs demands, how can they possibly continue to provide their services to iOS apps without increasing their price? The crazy thing is, because of Apple's price-matching ultimatum, everyone -- including users of other smartphone platforms -- will have to pay the higher price.
On another front entirely, according to some law professors quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Apple's move could even be kiboshed by antitrust and anticompetitive legislation. These could be interesting times indeed.
While leveraging its massive and wealthy userbase to get a slice of the subscription pie might've sounded great on paper, 30% might simply be too much to ask for. At the very least, it looks like Hulu, Netflix, Spotify, Last.fm and Rdio users are destined to pay a few dollars more per month. Or perhaps content providers will simply stick it to iOS and decamp to Google's dirty, bohemian app ecosystem.'Apple just f***** over online music subs for the iPhone' -- Last.fm co-founder on Apple's 30% cut originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 17 Feb 2011 07:15:00 EST. Firefox F1 social sharing add-on gets vertical UI, big sharing tweaks
F1 now lets you share with your LinkedIn contacts, Twitter support has been improved with the addition of direct messages, and you can now post to a group wall on Facebook. Mozilla has also added a thumbnailed image of pages you share via Gmail to the F1 email template.
It's not all wine-and-roses with the new F1 release, however. Mozilla has announced that support for Firefox 3.6 has been dropped, and the new F1 also requires a restart when you install it (we liked the fact that the original was restart-free). Still, the new version of F1 is cleaner, faster to load, and provides a smoother sharing experience.
Mozilla has also posted a demo video to show you what F1 is all about -- check it out after the break!

How to switch between your recently used apps on Android
Android is inherently capable of multitasking, and has a sophisticated mechanism for deciding which applications should be kept running in the background, and which should be killed to conserve system resources. That means Android keeps tabs on which applications are running, and when.
It turns out there's a simple way to tap into this mechanism: A long press of the Home hardware button on your device pops up an overlay screen showing the most recently-used applications. You can then just tap an application's icon to instantly switch to it. The site is geared towards kids between 5 to 12 years old. Each kid gets a monster pet and a room that can be decked out with virtual goods. But instead of trying to create "just another bloody virtual world," Smith wanted it to be more like a safe social network. "Instead of copying Club Penguin," he says, "we focused more on Facebook and tried to re-imagine that for kids." There is pin board where friends can leave messages and a news feed, but there are also games, quizes and virtual world activities. The penny-drop moment for us was that kids like to share and show off online just as much as adults do," he says. "If we could create the safe place online, we could create Facebook for kids." In the video above, Smith explains his strategy and gives me a brief tour of the site.

Solowheel self-balancing unicycle is as easy to ride as it is to afford (video)
We tried out the interesting device and found it entertaining, albeit quite a bit difficult. Getting started is the hardest part -- especially if you don't have anything to lean against -- but maintaining balance and still trying to lean your body to turn takes quite a bit of practice as well. That's right, there are no physical steering controls whatsoever and instead you use your body weight to control direction and speed. We could barely get going in our brief attempts on the device, but the rep on the floor was more skilled and made us realize we really need to build up our street cred. The whole concept is really a bit wild, and the company envisions people using these to do things like get to the train instead of on a bicycle or in a cab. We're not quite sure your average person is ready to slim down to one wheel in life just yet, but maybe in the future they will be. Still, as a toy it's most definitely intriguing, and you can see our horrid attempts at riding it in the video posted after the break or hit the more coverage link for another video of more skilled riders in action.

Swype vs. SlideIT: Battle of the Android keyboard swipers
Sliding keyboards utilize the fact that each word, as it is typed, tends to create a unique pattern across the keyboard. So rather than tap-tap-tap, you just touch the screen and drag across the keys you wish to type on. The keyboard then uses the resulting squiggle to figure out what it is you were trying to type.
So far, so good. In theory it sounds great, but in real life things aren't always so silky-smooth. For example, what happens when you need to type a word the keyboard doesn't know, such as a name? Or when there's more than one possible interpretation for the squiggle you just drew?
That's where the differences between different sliding keyboards come into play. In this review I'll be focusing on the two best-known products: Swype and SlideIT. Continue reading after the fold to find out which one is better!

How to use Internet Explorer 9 Tracking Protection Lists
First, head over to the Tracking Protection Lists page from Microsoft. A handful recognizable names are already listed, including TRUSTe and EasyList -- maintainers of the EasyPrivacy list you may be using in AdBlock on another browser.
Now, click Add TPL next to the provider you want to subscribe (we're going with EasyList alone, but it's OK to add multiple subscriptions). Confirm the pop-up window by clicking Add List, and you're done. It's that simple!
To manage your existing Tracking Protection List subscriptions, click the gear icon in the top-right corner of IE9, mouse over safety, and then click Tracking Protection Lists. You can then disable or remove active lists, or use the personal list to add your own custom blocking rules.

Android '2.4' Gingerbread will arrive in April, will support dual-core Honeycomb apps
Apparently the only change between 2.3 and 2.4 is the support for Honeycomb apps, which are designed to run with a dual-core processor -- and Android 2.3, as it stands, only supports single-core processors. Viewsonic is releasing a 'jumbo' smartphone with a 4.1" screen, which is why it understandably wants access to the Honeycomb library of tablet-oriented apps.
We're not sure why Google would break away from its now-famous versioning system. It's also odd that this news comes from a third party, and not Google itself. We wouldn't be surprised if this actually turns out to be version 2.3.3 or 2.3.4, rather than 2.4. The same source at Viewsonic also says that Ice Cream will be 3.1, and thus another tablet-oriented OS -- which would mean that the next smartphone version of Android could begin with 'J.'

WinZip releases new System Utilities Suite, we go hands-on
It's a suite composed of about a bajillion different tools (actually eighteen, but that's still a pretty high number). Note that these are really separate tools, not just menu options within one big tool. Each has its own UI, its own Start Menu entry, etc.
Part of WinZip's appeal is that many novice users know them; it's a very familiar brand, and people are likely to trust a system optimization tool that comes from a company they've known for years. But eighteen different tools many seem a tad complex for the average user, so indeed, there is one 'master utility,' which I spent some time with and recorded my initial impressions.
This utility doesn't encompass all other functionality, but it leads the user through a three-click process that optimizes many different aspects of the system. The idea is that this would be the first thing new users would run, and once that's done, they could use each of the other tools as needed (or according to their comfort level) to optimize specific aspects of their Windows PC.
Just to give you an idea, one of the purpose-specific tools is 'Game Optimizer,' which is a full-fledged VM running your game as its single application, with support for custom keymaps and other goodies. There's also a 'PC Fixer' and many other utilities in the suite.
You can watch me taking my first steps with System Utilities after the jump.
Note: We're going to be running a 10-license giveaway of WinZip System Utilities later on today, so keep your eyes peeled and your RSS reader open!Continue reading WinZip releases new System Utilities Suite, we go hands-onWinZip releases new System Utilities Suite, we go hands-on originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 14 Feb 2011 09:30:00 EST. Android Market Web Store finally released, better pricing controls and in-app purchases coming to Market
It's very similar to AppBrain, but you can purchase apps directly from the Web -- and push apps directly to your phone.
Additional features of the Web Store:
Lots of developer control to make app pages look attractive
The page is laid out intelligently, with links to other apps by the developer, screenshots of the app -- in essence, it's just like any other App Store
Sharing tools are built-in -- easy to send apps to friends, via Twitter, email
If you open a Web Store link on your phone, it opens the Market -- genius!
You can sort apps in a variety of ways -- compatibility (2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc.), popularity, and so on
You can see all of your installed/purchased apps -- just like AppBrain
Better monetization features are coming, too. In-app payments are coming -- and the whole 'buying something in another currency' issue will be alleviated with "Buyer Currency Support." (I'm not exactly sure how this will help, but it sounds like it will prevent those nasty cross-currency charges and exchange rates that those of us in Europe have been enjoying.)
There are some screenshots of in-app purchases, and Tap Tap Revenge for Android, after the break.

Wheretheladies.at hits the App Store, leverages geolocation to help you pick up girls
At the moment, the service only works in San Francisco, which will no doubt exacerbate a gaping flaw in the system: Foursquare check-ins do not contain the user's sexuality. Not that there's anything wrong with being pointed in the direction of a homosexuals, but I suspect that this app is probably targeted at men hoping to score. Having said that, I suppose women could also use the app, if they were so inclined.
The reviews on the App Store are hilarious, too. They're not quite up there with the Three Wolf Moon t-shirt on Amazon, but they're getting there. My favorite is this gem, by Jessica Z:
One evening I had decided to go out with some of my best lady friends to the Mission. About 10 minutes after arriving at 500 Club at least 15 handsome, intelligent, well dressed hipsters walked in to the bar. Thanks to this application I'm no longer searching for mister-right-now 'cause they come searching for me. This application has revolutionized my game, and I couldn't be more pleased (if you know what I'm sayin') about Where The Ladies At.
All joking aside, one commenter on TechCrunch points out that this app is more than a little creepy. Sure, it only uses public check-in data, but aggregators (such as Google!) should always be treated with caution. For now, the app just points us to large groups of women -- but what if a later version points to girls that are on their own in dark, dingy dives?Wheretheladies.at hits the App Store, leverages geolocation to help you pick up girls originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 02 Feb 2011 05:48:00 EST. Flash Player 10.2 with Stage Video hardware acceleration out of beta
We've covered this upgrade before, and after three months of beta testing, Adobe feels ready to roll this one out as an official update.
The key features that make Flash 10.2 a worthwhile upgrade are:
Proper full-screen support for multi-monitor systems: At long last, users with more than one monitor would be able to play a full-screen video on one monitor while working with another monitor! Hurrah! This long-overdue feature alone is worth the upgrade.
Stage Video: Adobe's new API for high-performance video playback across multiple platforms. In simple terms, it makes HD video fast and easy on your computer. The only snag is that developers will have to build in support for it - it's not just a client-side change. Adobe says YouTube, Vimeo, and Brightcove are already hard at work adding support.
Font smoothing: Flash player isn't all about video, after all. This improvement adds ClearType-like font smoothing.
Hardware acceleration: Last but not least, Flash 10.2 supports IE 9's hardware acceleration capabilities ("GPU rendering").
All in all, Flash 10.2 sounds like a worthy upgrade. Click here for the download page, and if you're using Chrome, be sure to disable the built-in Flash plug-in to reap the benefits unless you're on the updated Dev channel.Flash Player 10.2 with Stage Video hardware acceleration out of beta originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 09 Feb 2011 04:20:00 EST.
